Mobile payments service is not a USP for operators
Brief
:
19 Dec 2008
Only just over 20 percent of Dutch consumers are interested in mobile payments, a survey among 1,741 consumers from Telecompaper's Consumer Panel has found. The survey shows that men and youngsters are more interested in paying with their mobile handset than women and older mobile users. However, surprisingly, older consumers are more prepared to download an m-payments application. Furthermore, almost 30 percent of consumers interested in mobile payments are willing to shop at stores where they can use the service, thereby changing their shopping behaviour. When asked if respondents would buy a new handset, half of the under 18 group was willing to get a new phone to use m-payments, versus 32 percent of all interested respondents. However, few consumers are willing to switch mobile services provider to use mobile payments, suggesting that a mobile payments service is not a unique selling point for mobile operators.
