Oracle to buy Sun Microsystems for USD 7.4 bln Monday 20 April 2009 | 02:14 PM CET

Oracle agreed to buy Sun Microsystems for USD 7.4 billion, moving the software maker into the hardware market. Oracle will pay USD 9.50 per share in cash for Sun, for a total purchase price of USD 7.4 billion, or USD 5.6 billion net of Sun's cash and debt. The deal gives Oracle access to Sun's key software platforms Java and Solaris, as well as the opportunity to bundle its enterprise software with Sun's servers. Oracle Fusion Middleware is already built on the Java platform, while Solaris is the most popular operating system for Oracle's database products. Oracle expects the deal to add 15 cents to EPS and USD 1.5 billion to operating profit in the first year, excluding any one-time acquisition costs. The takeover is to close this summer, subject to Sun stockholder and regulatory approvals.
