Bell Canada buys control of Virgin Mobile Thursday 7 May 2009 | 05:24 PM CET

Bell Canada is buying out the 50 percent it does not yet own in Virgin Mobile Canada for CAD 142 million. The operator has also agreed to an exclusive, long-term licence to continue using the Virgin Mobile brand in Canada as well as cooperating with the Virgin Group on sponsoring and media events. The takeover is expected to enhance synergies between the Bell mobile activities and Virgin Mobile, from shared network infrastructure, handset acquisition and common distribution with third-party retailers. Virgin Mobile will maintain its own branding and shops. Started in 2004 as a MVNO on the Bell network, Virgin Mobile Canada offers prepaid and postpaid services, targeting the youth market.
