Microsoft proposes browser choice with Windows

Microsoft has proposed offering customers using the Windows operating system a choice of web browsers, in order to allay competition concerns in Europe. The European Commission confirmed Microsoft's proposal for a 'ballot screen', whereby consumers would be shown a screen from which they could easily install competing web browsers, set one of those browsers as a default, and disable Internet Explorer. Under the proposal, Windows 7 would include Internet Explorer, but users could also use the ballot screen to install alternative browsers. In addition OEMs would be able to install competing web browsers, set those as default and disable Internet Explorer should they so wish. The proposal follows billions in fines issued by the commission against Microsoft for anti-competitive practices such as bundling Internet Explorer free with Windows. The commission said it will consider the practical effects of the software company's proposal before deciding whether it meets its requirements for resolving the competition issues. In addition to preventing further abuse of Microsoft's dominant position on the computer software market, the commission said it wants to ensure sufficient consumer choice for a range of web browsers. Microsoft has also made proposals in relation to disclosures of interoperability information that would improve the interoperability between thirdparty products and Windows and Windows Server. Again, these proposals require further investigation before the commission reaches any conclusion as to the next steps. Microsoft's proposals will be published in full on its website.

KPN Q4 2009 revenue analysis shows improvements
Brief
:
01 Feb 2010
In this brief we analyse KPN's quarterly revenues, since the launch of the Back To Growth strategy, two years ago. We have been able to distinguish between 27 line items. Topline growth has been absent and may not return before 2012, but KPN has been laying the foundations for growth. Declining voice revenues now constitute only 12 percent of total revenues, whereas high-growth areas (mobile data, TV, Getronics) contribute 30 percent. Two years ago these numbers read 14 percent and 24 percent respectively.
