Symbian confirms switch to open source Thursday 4 February 2010 | 10:44 AM CET

The Symbian Foundation has completed the move to open source, opening up the code behind the mobile operating system to all developers. When Nokia acquired Symbian in 2008, the Symbian Foundation was set up to manage and license the software. The non-profit foundation has now realised its promise of making the open source code available to anyone. Previously the open-source version was only available to foundation members, which include Nokia, AT&T, LG, Motorola, NTT Docomo, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone. Symbian expects the move to full open source will help the 10-year-old platform evolve more quickly, as any company or individual can now contribute features, both for mobile phones and other devices. The Symbian code will be available for download from 4 Feburary, under the terms of the Eclipse Public Licence. Also available for download are the complete development kits for creating applications (the Symbian Developer Kit) and mobile devices (the Product Development Kit), based on Symbian v3. The foundation also published the platform roadmap and planned features up to and including 2011.
