Google almost certain to stop Chinese search engine - report Monday 15 March 2010 | 02:49 AM CET

Google is '99.9 percent' certain it will close its Chinese search engine google.cn. Google has been in talks with the Chinese government over the company's future in the country after the company announced it would stop censoring search results on google.cn and that it was considering pulling out of the country altogether following a hacker attack that allegedly originated in China. The Chinese government, meanwhile, has warned the company it is not prepared to compromise on internet censorship to stop Google from leaving the country. The company could make a decision on shutting down the Chinese search engine shortly but would take some time to close the actual business to protect employees from retaliation by authorities, The Financial Times reports citing a person familiar with the matter. Google is seeking ways to keep other operations, such as its research centre and advertising sales operations (for the Chinese-language Google.com service outside of China), operating. The company has ruled out handing majority control, or the entire business, to a local player.
