Brazil to raise at least BRL 3.8 bln in 4G auction

Friday 27 April 2012 | 17:11 CET | News
Brazilian telecom agency Anatel said that the reserve prices in the auction of 2.5GHz and 450MHz frequencies will total at least BRL 3.8 billion. The 2.5GHz band will be used for LTE services, while winners of the 450MHz frequencies will be required to roll out services in rural areas. Brazil targets all municipalities with at least 10,000 inhabitants to have LTE service by the end of 2016. The winners of the 450MHz band will be those that offer the lowest price to deliver broadband services to end-users. The government wants an offer on a minimum bundle of services for rural areas including 100 minutes of voice and a broadband speed of 256 kbps. If no acceptable proposals are received, it will auction the 450MHz band at the top price, alongside the 2.5GHz band. Those interested in the auction may apply until 05 June, and the bids will be opened on 12 June. Winning companies will have to bring 4G serviced to all cities hosting the Confederations Cup by April 2013, to all cities hosting the 2014 World Cup by December 2013, and all state capitals and cities with more than 500,000 inhabitants by December 2014.
