CIBC, Rogers launch NFC mobile payments
CIBC and Rogers Communications have completed the first point-of-sale mobile credit card transaction in Canada using a secure SIM card inside an NFC-enabled smartphone. This new way to pay will be available to CIBC credit card clients using a Rogers smartphone, allowing them to pay for everyday purchases by holding their smartphone up to a Visa payWave or MasterCard PayPass contactless payment terminal at merchants across Canada. As the rollout to clients begins, the new CIBC Mobile Payment App will initially be available on two smartphones on the Rogers mobile network, the Blackberry Bold 9900 and Blackberry Curve 9360, beginning 16 November. NFC SIM cards are required to access the service on Rogers Suretap ready devices, which can be ordered online. Additional Suretap-ready devices will support the service in 2013, including Android and Windows Phone 8 platforms.

Rogers to offer CAD 100,000 for Canadian Film Award

Rogers Communications has announced a significant prize for the Rogers Best Canadian Film Award. The cash prize for the best Canadian film in 2012 has been increased to CAD 100,000 and will be awarded to the director of the winning film as voted for by members of the Toronto Film Critics Association (TFCA). Rogers became the founding sponsor of the TFCA Awards Gala five years ago. The Rogers Best Canadian Film Award will be presented in Toronto on 08 January 2013 at the 16th Annual TFCA Gala Awards Dinner.

Rogers to increase speeds across internet tiers

Canadian operator Rogers Communications has announced it is increasing speeds across its internet tiers. Customers will now have up to 150Mbps download speeds across Ontario. The New Ultimate tier, recently doubled from up to 75 Mbps to 150 Mbps, is scheduled to be available to most customers by the end of the year with a monthly data allowance of 250 GB. Rogers reports 2% increase in Q3 revenue

Canadian operator Rogers Communications reported revenues of CAD 3.17 billion for the third quarter, an increase of 2 percent year-over-year. Operating profit grew 5 percent to CAD 1.29 billion, and net income was CAD 495 million or CAD 0.96 per share, up 1 percent from a year earlier. The Canadian operator maintained its earlier growth outlook for the year.

Rogers declares quarterly dividend

Rogers Communications announced that its board of directors has declared a quarterly dividend totalling 39.5 cents per share on each of its outstanding Class B Non-Voting shares and Class A Voting shares. The quarterly dividend will be paid on 2 January 2013 to shareholders of record on 14 December and is the fourth quarterly dividend to reflect the increased USD 1.58 per share annualised dividend level.

Rogers completes investment in theScore

Rogers Communications has announced it has acquired 11,162,084 Class A Subordinate Voting Shares of theScore (Score Digital), as initially announced on 25 August. The total consideration paid by Rogers Media in connection with the transaction was USD 167 million. Rogers acquired the Score Digital shares for investment purposes and has no current intention of acquiring ownership, control or direction over any more Score shares, but reserves the right to do so.
