Dutch arrest 17-yr old for KPN hack

Tuesday 27 March 2012 | 09:12 CET | News
A 17-year-old boy has been arrested, accused of hacking into KPN's systems on 16 January, the Dutch Office of the Public Prosecutor announced. The National Police Services (KLPD) has seized an encrypted computer, two laptops and data carriers, such as external hard drives, USB sticks and DVDs. KPN's computer system was likely hacked because of its vulnerability. The hacker was able to reach the highest access rights to a few hundred servers. These servers were used for internet services and the storage of (customer) information. The boy from Barendrecht will be held in Rotterdam for two weeks. Apparently, he bragged about his KPN hacking exploits, under aliases such as "xS", "Yoshioka" and "Yui", in a chat channel to students from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). The cyber crime investigators from the National Crime Squad have been following the boy's internet performance for weeks. KPN knows of the arrest but has refrained from comment, except to say that it is taking internal security issues very seriously.
