NL Alert SMS, twitter system to launch this summer

Monday 18 April 2011 | 10:34 CET | News
The Netherlands will from this summer send national alarms via SMS and twitter, besides the usual siren and deployment of an emergency transmitter, the Dutch Association of Mayors announced, as reported by the NOS. All those in the vicinity of a disaster will be alerted via MS. The introduction of the new NL Alerts systems, which has been delayed a number of times, will be accompanied by information on what people will specifically be able to expect from the system. A message from NL Alert will be automatically delivered to all mobile phones in a particular area. The system will not use SMS but cell broadcast technology: sending a message to all phones within reach of one or more cells of the GSM network.
