O2 UK, HTC to offer phone without standard charger
O2 UK is teaming with HTC to launch a new phone with a micro-USB charging slot. Customers will still get a micro-USB to USB cable in the box. The move is designed to help the environment, with research showing that there are over 100 million phone chargers lying in drawers unused in the UK. O2 hopes to do this with more phones in the future. The operator insists that customers will still be able to buy a charger for cost price if they need one.

O2 UK appoints new head of sports sponsorship division

O2 UK has appointed sports marketer Gareth Griffiths to lead its sports sponsorship business, reports Marketing Magazine. Griffiths will join O2 in November, replacing Nic Fletcher, who has left to become head of marketing for the Rugby Football Union (RFU). He will work on marketing activity for the RFU and Nike.

O2 UK has selected Cisco as a key technology provider for its public Wi-Fi network. Roll-out of the network has already commenced, and to date O2 has deployed in thousands of locations using Cisco wireless technology. The operator plans to expand O2 Wifi to cover 15,000 UK locations over the next two years. Telefonica, Aurasma partner on augmented reality services

Telefonica Digital has signed a global partnership with augmented reality platform Aurasma. Under the terms of the deal, Telefonica will integrate Aurasma's technology into the range of media services Telefonica offers brands and advertisers. The agreement will see Telefonica drive distribution of Aurasma's technology across its footprint, starting initially with the UK through O2.

Telefonica UK (O2) has confirmed that all iPhone 5 stock available for pre-order has been sold. It is offering the phone for free with the standard tariff at GBP 46 a month, with unlimited minutes and texts, and 1 GB of data. With the On & On plan, the phone is being offered for free with a GBP 46 a month plan, for GBP 49.99 with a GBP 41 plan, for GBP 99.99 with a GBP 36 plan, for GBP 199.99 with a GBP 31 plan and for GBP 249.99 with a GBP 26 a month plan.

O2 UK keen to accelerate 4G network launch timetable

O2 UK has told BBC News it is 'in talks' to accelerate the deployment of 4G mobile services. A company spokesperson told the BBC that it wanted to get its 4G network operational as soon as possible, and that it was looking to reach an agreement to bring the current timeframe forward. It will launch 4G services with a range of handsets from Nokia, Samsung and others.

O2 UK promotes O2 Travel service with 'postcard' campaign

Telefonica UK has launched a postcard ad campaign to promote the new O2 Travel service. The campaign features model and actress Kelly Brook and celebrates the art of the traditional seaside postcard by bringing it up to date for the digital world. O2 Travel and Brook have made a series of 'social media postcards'. O2 Travel research found that over half of travellers surveyed by O2 Travel (60%) send texts home, 39 percent phone home and 34 percent use Facebook to share news when on holiday.
