
Russia mobile market contracts in Q1

Russia lost an estimated 90,000 mobile subscribers in the first quarter, due mainly to a decline of nearly half a million at Vimpelcom, according to research by AC&M Consulting. Market leader MTS added less than 5,000 new subscribers for a total 71.331 million at the end of March, and Megafon gained around 107,000 customers to finish with a total 62.675 million. Tele2 Russia took the most net additions, growing by 166,000 in the three months to 22.882 million. Vimpelcom, which operates under the name Beeline, lost 444,000 customers to end the quarter with a total 55.666 million. Rostelecom added a net 36,000 new subscribers to reach 13.596 million. In total Russia had 234.40 million mobile subscribers at end-March, equal to a penetration of 161.3 percent.
