SFR invests EUR 1.6 bln in networks in 2010

Monday 17 October 2011 | 12:43 CET | News
French mobile and broadband operator SFR has announced that it invested EUR 1.6 billion in fixed and mobile network infrastructure in 2010. It states that it is currently the only operator to offer over 20 Mbps speeds over half of its mobile network, enabling a 100 MB video to be downloaded in 38 seconds. Its 3G/3G+ network covers 97 percent of the population at the end of September. That month it ran an LTE demonstration in Marseille as part of its efforts to bring faster mobile data services to France's over 7 million smartphone users. SFR adds that it has the biggest band of frequencies in the country, allowing it to manage a maximal number of communications simultaneously. The operator also uses Femtocells to increase 3G penetration in homes and offices. SFR has around 57,000 km of fibre linking over 4,000 subcriber connection points, giving it France's biggest ADSL capillary network. Some 5 million homes use the operator's SFR Neufbox or Neufbox Evolution gateways. SFR has already installed fibre in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Grenoble, Villeurbanne, Creteil, Boulogne and Issy-les-Moulineaux, and expects to connect 500,000 homes by the end of the year. It will bring fibre to around 30 more cities in 2012. The company has invested EUR 150 million a year in fibre since 2008, which will rise to EUR 200 million a year from 2012.
