Swisscom said it plans to shed some 400 jobs in 2013 but will create about 300 in growth areas. The cost will be booked as a one-off restructuring provision in the fourth quarter of 2012 of around CHF 50 million. It said new businesses have made up for a decline in revenue from voice telephony over the past ten years, and job composition has changed, too. Swisscom will create around 300 jobs in growth areas next year, while at the same time reducing around 100 managerial and 300 jobs that are governed by a collective labour agreement. Employees affected can make use of Swisscom's social plan.
Earlier, newspaper Handelszeitung had reported on its website, citing insiders, that between 10 percent and 15 percent of Swisscom's workforce could be hit by the restructuring, possibly reaching 1,500 jobs in the worst case scenario.
Swisscom said the number of Full Time Equivalent (FTE) jobs in Switzerland grew from 15,199 at the end of 2005 to 16,415 in the third quarter of 2012.
