Taiwan's mobile broadband subscriptions are forecast to more than double to 40 million users over the next five years, reports the Taipei Times citing the Swedish company Ericsson. There were 17.82 million mobile broadband users at the end of 2012, according to National Communications Commission data. The smartphone penetration rate is expected to grow to 70 percent in Taiwan by 2018, from 35-40 percent this year, Ericsson Taiwan president Philip Tseng said at a media briefing. Ericsson forecast that global LTE subscribers would grow to 100 million this year from last year's 55 million. By 2018, global LTE users are expected to increase to 1.6 billion, the firm added.
