Twitter implements country-based blocking
Monday 30 January 2012 | 10:07 CET |
News
Twitter has adapted its policies to allow tweets to be blocked only in specific countries. Previously if a tweet was found to be in violation of local laws or regulations, the company had to remove the message from its site worldwide. Now it will be able to operate more flexibly in a wider number of countries, by allowing messages to be blocked only in the affected country. Twitter said it has yet to use the new feature, but if it does, it will let the user know their message was blocked. Users in that country will also see an alert box that says "Tweet withheld" or "@Username withheld" in place of the affected tweet or account.
