UPC to start Wi-Fi hotspot tests in Zutphen

Friday 21 June 2013 | 13:26 CET | News
UPC will begin testing a Wi-Fi network for subscribers in Zutphen on 1 July, when it activates the public hotspots on wireless modems. UPC customers will then be able to access the internet from their mobile devices whenever they visit each other. UPC will inform customers in Zutphen about the test in the next few days. Each user must log in via the My UPC portal and add their devices. Customers can add as many devices as they wish, though only three can be used simultaneously. A UPC modem can host up to five users simultaneously, with download speeds at 2.5-3 Mbps. Zutphen was chosen as a testing ground because it is a defined community with a relatively large number of wireless modems, a company spokesperson said. The test will focus mainly on user experience and technical issues. It is not known how long the test will take, though some market watchers mentioned a few weeks. UPC wants to eventually roll out the service to its entire catchment area.
