Vodafone targets 300,000 M-Pesa users in 1st yr in Romania

Tuesday 1 April 2014 | 17:48 CET | News
Vodafone Romania estimates its recently launched M-Pesa m-payment service will reach approximately 300,000 end-users in the first year of activity. Vodafone Romania m-payments head Cristian Motca said the forecast refers to active users, namely customers who make at least one transaction every three months, writes local publication Wall-Street.ro. Motca added that he expects approximately 60-70 percent of the transactions made through M-Pesa to be money transfers. This should be followed by bill payments, top-ups and payments to merchants.

Romania is the first European country where M-Pesa was launched. Vodafone plans to offer M-Pesa for payments at merchants this year, such as at coffee shops and restaurants in cities, Motca said. In rural areas, the company is interested in partnerships with small stores, he added. Also, the next step would be to extend the partnership with Agroland, a local network of agriculture stores, so that their network also becomes a merchant, Motca said.
