Pinnen over IP
After an initial migration of cash payments to PIN-based payments, right now there is a transition going on from ISDN/PSTN based PIN payments to IP-based PIN solutions: PoIP. Not only has this to do with the move to all-IP networks, but from 2013 on all ISDN/PSTN-based terminals have to be replaced due to security measures imposed by Currence, the non-governmental regulator for PIN payments. This transition will occur mostly in the SME market, since large retail companies offer PIN payments as a value-added service on their virtual private network (VPN) offerings. Furthermore, figures of Currence show that the number of PIN terminals is rising and that the terminals are being used more frequently. But while the number of potential customers is rising, the revenue opportunity is not quite keeping up because PoIP is a much cheaper service than ISDN/PSTN-based PIN payments. Legacy providers are set to lose analogue-based revenues, while newcomers may benefit from not being burdened by having these legacy revenues. They will gain new customers and market share, while building a new revenue stream.
