South Africa: more like Europe than Africa in terms of mobile payments

MTN recently announced that it was ceasing its mobile payment activities in South Africa, only a few months after Vodacom discontinued M-Pesa in South Africa. MTN stated that the main reason was a lack of commercial viability, but promised to stay active in the mobile financial services area in South Africa. When Vodacom stopped M-Pesa in South Africa it also said that because of the high levels of financial inclusion in South Africa, there was little prospect of the M-Pesa product achieving the critical mass needed to succeed.
