800 mln smart meters to be installed globally by 2020-survey

The number of electric smart meters installed worldwide is set to reach the figure of 800 million by 2020, according to a report commissioned by Telefonica Digital in partnership with Navigant Research. The findings reveal that China is expected to have installed 435 million smart meters based on M2M technology by 2020, followed by the US with 132 million devices, Japan (58.7 million), the UK (53 million) and France (35 million). Europe is set to register the fastest electric smart meter penetration, growing from 15 percent to 85 percent by 2020. This is largely due to the EU smart metering
