ACLU finds rise in govt surveillance of phone records

The American Civil Liberties Union has reported a sharp increase in surveillance of electronic communications by US justice officials. After a Freedom of Information requests and a lengthy lawsuit, the civil rights group obtained the attorney general reports for 2010 and 2011 on the use of "pen register" and "trap and trace" surveillance powers. These give access to the phone numbers of incoming and outgoing calls and the time, date and length of those calls, as well as allow government to intercept the "to" and "from" addresses of e-mail messages, records about instant message conversations,
