Adiconsum asks regulator to block Mediaset encryption

Italian consumer association Adiconsum has urged communications regulator Agcom to block the decision by commercial broadcaster Mediaset to encrypt its free-to-air satellite channels on Sky Italia's DTH platform. The broadcaster last week announced that it would encrypt the signal of channels such as Canale 5, Rete 4 and Italia 1 starting 07 September if an agreement isn't reached on retransmissions fees. This means satellite viewers will need to acquire a TivuSat decoder and smartcard, for which no monthly subscription is required, if they want to continue watching Mediaset's FTA TV
