Adva and German Aerospace Centre set record for free-space laser data transmissions

Friday 11 May 2018 | 12:56 CET | News
Adva Optical Networking and the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) have announced they have set a new data transmission record for free-space laser communications via satellite, which marks an important step in delivering broadband to rural and underdeveloped areas. They successfully transmitted 13.16 Tbps of data over a distance of 10.45 kilometres in the trial, which emulated a ground to a geostationary satellite link. The trial's laser connection was run between a ground station in Weilheim and a mock satellite on the mountain of Hohenpeissenberg over 10 kilometres away.
