African smartphone shipments fall 7.1% in Q1 with downturns in Nigeria and South Africa

Africa's smartphone market saw a 7.1 percent decline in shipments quarter on quarter (QoQ) in Q1 to 21.5 million units, according to International Data Corporation (IDC). The two biggest markets, Nigeria and South Africa, underperformed bercause of seasonal effects, posting QoQ declines of 14.7 percent and 23.4 percent respectively. On a year-on-year basis, African shipments increased 5.6 percent.
