Airtel secures Gabon's first 3G mobile licence

Gabon's telecommunications regulator, Artel, has awarded the country's first 3G mobile licence to the country's biggest cellular operator, Airtel, Afrique Info reports, citing official sources. The move comes ahead of the African Cup of Nations football tournament being held in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea between 21 January and 12 February 2012. Airtel Gabon director Louis Bubala said that the licence will enable all segments of society to gain access to the internet and to many innovative services.
