Algerie Telecom to invest USD 2 billion in fixed broadband
Algeria plans to invest around USD 2 billion in broadband infrastructure in the next 5 years, ICT minister Zohra Der wrote in a message read by chief of staff Salim Djaalal to attendees of a fibre workshop in Algiers. The minister wrote that the networks would comply with construction standards to ensure their security, reliability and interoperability to deliver a level of service quality and confidence to consumers and business customers. Elsewhere, Azouaou Mehmel, CEO of state-owned operator Algerie Telecom, told national daily Liberte that the company would boost the minimum speed of its ADSL service from 512 kbps to 2 Mbp[s and that its new offers would provide value for money. The CEO acknowledged that this month's advent of mobile 3G in Algeria would create a challenge at first for the state-owned operator's fixed broadband service, but he added "... we plan to evolve by raising bandwidth and offering a better quality of service."
