Amazon has announced the acquisition of autonomous driving specialist Zoox, based in California. The deal is worth over USD 1 billion, people familiar with the matter told The Information and The Financial Times.

Started in 2014, Zoox is developing an electric self-driving vehicle that targets the ride-hailing market. The company employs around 1,000 people.

The reports say Amazon will use the deal to develop create a self-driving fleet for deliveries, in a move similar to Volvo with Waymo. Aicha Evans, Zoox CEO, and Jesse Levinson, Zoox co-founder and CTO, will continue to lead the company as a standalone business, Amazon said.
