Apple set to release three new iPhones this year - report

Friday 11 January 2019 | 15:31 CET | News

Apple plans to launch three new iPhone models this year, one of which will be a successor to the lower-end XR, according to unnamed sources cited by the Wall Street Journal. The new phones will include a number of upgrades including a triple-rear-camera system in the flagship model, touted as a successor to the iPhone XS Max, while the lower-end models are set to feature a double rear camera. Rival Samsung released the Galaxy A9 last year with four rear cameras, while Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro and P20 Pro come with three rear cameras.

The report also indicates that Apple is considering sticking with phones that contain organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays from 2020, and dropping LCD displays because the OLED screens on the current XS models are considered to provide better contrast than the less expensive LCD displays on the XR and earlier iPhones such as the 7 and 8 models. Some of the sources also suggested that Apple may cut costs by trimming functions such as the force-touch module from its 2019 lineup.

The news comes after Apple last week lowered its revenue guidance for the first quarter, citing lower-than-expected iPhone revenue in China as one of the main factors due above all to a maturing smartphone market and tough competition from local rivals.
