Arcep approves new 5G pilots in 3.5 GHz band

Wednesday 12 June 2019 | 13:27 CET | News

French regulator Arcep published details of several new authorisations for 5G pilots in the 3.5 GHz band (3400 - 3800 MHz), approved between March and May for short-term use of the spectrum in localised areas. The country’s four mobile network operators were all granted at least one authorisation during this period.

Free Mobile received a single licence to carry out technical tests in Paris for six months, starting from 01 June. Among the authorisations granted to Orange, the regulator approved a six-month pilot on the high-speed TGV railway line between Lyon and Macon, starting from 15 July.

Research centre Eurecom renewed its licence for 5G tests near its facilities in Sophia-Antipolis for a period of six months, while ICT company Hub One has been authorised to carry out a trial at the Paris Charles-de-Gaulle airport for twelve months, starting in mid-April.

French spectrum agency ANFR recently said that the number of cell sites authorised for 5G pilots reached 111 as of 01 June. Bouygues Telecom led the way with 52 sites, followed by Orange with 34 and SFR with 25.
