Arcep seeks review of USO's payphone requirement

Tuesday 7 January 2014 | 09:33 CET | News
French telecom regulator Arcep has recommended a reduction in the number of payphones the universal service operator is required to provide, Numerama reports. The national operator is expected to be redesignated as the universal service operator (USO) by 24 February at the latest. Arcep also asked for Orange France to be paid more when it provides more than the minimum number of payphones, with the income to be used to defray the cost of removing phone booths at other locations. Payphones are costly to maintain and underused now that nearly everyone in France owns at least one mobile phone.
