ARD and ZDF consider licence fee hike based on inflation

Monday 31 December 2018 | 10:47 CET | News
German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF can decide to link the licence fee to inflation, according to a DPA report. Federal states in Germany already asked to link the fees to the inflation rate instead of deciding the amount of the contribution every four years. The proposal is "a viable option", according to the ARD chairman Ulrich Wilhelm in an interview with DPA. Wilhelm said that, for example, the inflation in the cost of music, film or sports rights for the radio was around 17 percent between 2009 and 2017, while consumer prices rose by 10.6 percent during this period.
