Argentina smartphone sales down 22% to 3.5 mln in Q1

Monday 17 July 2017 | 14:26 CET | News

Sales of smartphones in Argentina plummeted by around 22 percent from 4.5 million to 3.5 million units in the first three months of 2017, reports local daily El Cronista. According to industry sources, around 3.5 million of the expected 12 million devices shipped this year will be sold illegally on the black market. The one bright spot in the fluctuating market is the mid-range smartphone segment, which saw a spike in sales due in part to the boost provided by the government’s 'Mobile Internet Access Plan'. Under the terms of the programme the operators Movistar, Claro and Personal made available a number of handsets for ARS 2,200 in up to 12 interest-free instalments in a bid to boost 4G adoption across the country.
