Arjel to pay ISPs costs to block illegal betting websites

Tuesday 3 January 2012 | 12:04 CET | News
The French government will indemnify ISPs for blocking online betting operators' websites from 2 January, according to a decree published in the Official Gazette. Under a 2010 law ISPs can be required by regulator Arjel to prevent access to the domain names of gambling website operators if backed up by a court order. Following criticism from ISPs, Arjel agreed to pay ISPs' costs. Numerama writes that the measure will be ineffective because consumers will be able to log onto unauthorised gambling websites via other DNS servers such as those of Google or OpenDNS.
