AT&T to deploy small cells to strengthen VoLTE coverage

AT&T has announced the deployment of more than 40,000 small cells, which the operator plans to launch in some markets by year-end. Speaking at the Jefferies 2012 Global Technology, Media and Telecom conference in New York, Bill Smith, president of network operations at AT&T, said that as part of its network upgrade Project VIP, AT&T is deploying both small cells and distributed antenna systems (DAS). This year the company is focusing primarily on indoor deployments. Smith said AT&T is already testing VoLTE in a few locations and will launch some initial market by year-end, FierceWireless
