Austria could get 300,000 fibre connections in next 3 years

Monday 2 December 2019 | 10:11 CET | News

In the next three years, 300,000 households and companies could be connected to fibre in Austria in rural areas, said the regional infrastructure company noGIG citing figures presented at the CMG Fiberday 2019 in Graz. This means investments of a total of EUR 600 million. Around 340,000 households and companies, or about 7.4 percent of the total, are currently served by a FTTH or FTTB connection.

The financial resources for expanding the network through infrastructure companies come not only from the public sector, as the model is also attractive to investors. Alternative infrastructure companies are building fibre networks in five federal states already. They are Niederosterreichische Glasfaserinfrastrukturgesellschaft (noGIG), Fiber Service OO, Steirische Breitband & Digitalinfrastrukturgesellschaft (sbidi), Breitbandinitiative Karnten (BIK), and Breitbandserviceagentur Tirol.
