Austrian regulator RTR has highlighted the positive development in 4G Sim cards, referring to the Monitor for the third quarter of 2016. The total number of Sim cards circulating in Austria reached 14 million at the end of September 2016, an increase by 3 percent from 1 June to 30 September 2016. The number of 4G Sim cards grew significantly, by 41.3 percent from 3.98 million in the second quarter 2016 to 5.62 million in Q3 2016.

When combining the number of 4G Sim cards with the data consumption on the retail market and download speeds, it can be said that the 4G mobile networks are gradually filling up. With ever more 4G Sim cards, data consumption is exponentially growing and download speeds slowly dropping, explained Johannes Gungl, Director of RTR for Telecommunications and Post. He said the data clearly shows that it is necessary to continuously invest in mobile networks in order to follow the increasing demand for sufficient capacity and to keep network quality high.
