Bangladesh started a trial of biometric registration for mobile phone SIM cards. Mobile operators will use the biometric system to verify a customer's fingerprint against the Election Commission's database when a customer buys a new SIM, The Daily Star reports online. The Bangladesh Election Commission has a database of around 70 million citizens. The pilot run for this initiative will be launched from November 1 and its official launch will be from December 16, said Tarana Halim, state minister for post and telecommunications ministry at a inaugural ceremony. The government hopes biometric registration and re-registration for existing mobile subscribers will be complete by March next year.
