BBC extends Orkney 5G broadcast trial until end-September

Wednesday 15 May 2019 | 16:58 CET | News

The BBC has announced an extension of its 5G broadcast radio trial in Stronsay, Orkney, until end-September 2019. Launched in February, the trial allows residents to receive live broadcasts from 13 BBC radio stations via 5G mobile networks, through a modified version of the BBS Sounds app.

Initial research shows that 90 percent of participants in the trial are satisfied with the mobile internet service; 100 percent were satisfied with the range of stations provided by the radio signal; and more than half were satisfied with the portability and flexibility of the trial service, how easy it is to use, and how it has helped them feel connected and keep up to date.

Extending the trial will allow the BBC and partners to further optimise the technical parameters of the radio signal, and collect more technical data to gain a better understanding of live 5G broadcasting. The trial is being run as part of the 5G RuralFirst partnership.
