BBC iPlayer used by 65 mln foreign viewers for free

Research from Global Web Index shows that 65 million people worldwide are using proxy servers or VPNs to watch BBC iPlayer online, reports The Guardian. The free catch-up TV service is meant to only be available to UK users. Based on what the BBC previously charged for the global iPlayer service, which shut down in June, the corporation is losing out on millions of pounds of potential income. In China alone an estimated 38.5 million are using iPlayer. In each country surveyed by the report, 1-8 percent of online adults admitted to using VPNs and having accessed iPlayer.
