BBC Sounds app attracts 1.3 million weekly users

Tuesday 14 May 2019 | 17:09 CET | News

The BBC Sounds app now has 1.3 million weekly users, with 84 percent of app users saying they would recommend Sounds to a friend. This was confirmed by James Purnell, BBC director of radio and education, in a speech at the Radio Festival in London.

He told the conference that the Sounds app will be highly personalised for users by autumn 2019. He also said that the BBC wants to see if the app can play a wider role and wants to open it up to podcasts made outside of the BBC. The corporation is also in talks about opening BBC Sounds to commercial radio as well. He warned that the radio industry must not make the same mistakes as other industries where the incumbent has failed to collaborate, leaving new players to aggregate their content and capture the audience.
