BBC to fund free licences, could charge for iPlayer - report

UK Chancellor George Osborne is expected to use the Budget on 08 July to announce that the BBC will have to fund the cost of free TV licences for over 75s itself, BBC News reports. This would cost the BBC GBP 650 million, equal to one fifth of its current budget. Speaking on the Andrew Marr Show, Osborne said that the BBC needed to make a contribution towards the deficit. The government and the BBC are also understood to be in talks about a possible charge for people to use iPlayer, which could help recover some of the costs of funding the free TV licences.
