Brazil, Peru and Amazon compete for .amazon domain

Representatives of the Brazilian and Peruvian governments are disputing the use of the '.amazon' domain with online retailer Amazon. Amazon is the English spelling for the name of the world's largest river by volume of water and the world's largest forest. The two countries have already filed a complaint to ICANN, the body responsible for the release of internet domains, and the main argument is that to allow private companies to register geographical names, as a way to reinforce the strength of a brand and increase profits, does not serve the public interest.
