The natural disaster SMS alert system in Brazil has begun operation nationwide, said telecoms sector association SindiTelebrasil. With the inclusion of the North and Northeast States, the entire population can now register to receive text alerts on mobile phones about the risk of natural disasters, such as heavy rains, floods and landslides. The system started operating in February 2017 and supports dissemination of information via SMS. To date, 2.6 million citizens have registered and 48 million alert messages have been forwarded.
