BTCL blames organised crime for rise in copper theft

Tuesday 21 May 2019 | 11:21 CET | News
Botswana Telecommunications (BTCL) has blamed crime syndicates for the recent escalation in copper cable thefts, which have seen the telecoms group lose about BWP 3 million in the last two months, Mmegi reported. The syndicates involve criminals working as foot soldiers on the ground to vandalise and steal copper from BTCL assets, feeding this to intermediaries who process the cables on to kingpins either within or outside Botswana.
