Canal Plus wins Formula 1 rights

French pay TV operator Canal Plus has won exclusive rights to Formula 1 races for three years for an undisclosed amount. Les Echos estimates that the broadcaster is paying around USD 30 a year. The previous contract, held by free-to-air channel TF1, is worth USD 40 million a year. TF1 sought to lower this price because of a fall in viewers to 2.7 million per race, on average, this year, versus 4 million in 2000. A Bouygues-owned channel submitted a much lower bid and new entrant BeIN Sport was also in the running. Canal Plus said it would broadcast a highlights show in free-to-air mode on
