CBK extends free mobile money transactions amid COVID-19

The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has extended free mobile money transactions below KES 1,000 to help promote cashless transactions during the Covid-19 pandemic. CBK noted a significant increase in the use of mobile money channels by individuals in both value and number of transactions since measures were introduced in March to encourage cashless payments. More than 80 percent of transactions were for KES 1,000 or less, so eliminating charges has helped cushion the most vulnerable households, it said.
