Spanish operator Cellnex Telecom has received a EUR 100 million loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to help fund the rollout of new mobile infrastructure in Spain and Italy. Specifically, the funding will be used to build new telecom towers and rooftop sites to host mobile broadband base stations in the two countries, as well as investments to increase the capacity of existing infrastructures to accommodate additional base stations and new operators.

The project also includes the deployment of fibre optics and microwave radio links to connect the base stations to the core networks of the promoter's customer operators, and the rollout of new Distributed Antenna System (DAS) nodes to improve indoor coverage and increase capacity of the customer operators' networks in urban areas.

The EIB said a total of EUR 54 million will be allocated to the Spanish rollout, with EUR 46 million going to Italy. The total cost of the project is estimated at EUR 201 million.

At the end of September, Cellnex had a total of 20,035 sites throughout Europe, including 7,758 in Italy and 7,475 in Spain, plus 1,233 DAS and Small Cells nodes.
