Chilean earthquake causes congestion but no blackouts

Chile's telecommunications networks remained in full working order and only suffered congestion in some areas in the aftermath of the 8.2 magnitude earthquake that struck just off the coast of the country on 16 September, said telecoms watchdog Subtel. In a statement issued just after the earthquake struck at around 20.00 hours local time some 46km west of the coastal city of Illapel, the regulator said all telecoms services, including telephony, radio, TV and the internet were operating normally but there had been saturation due to traffic spikes. Subtel said it was monitoring the situation
