Chilean operators barred from using word 'unlimited'

Tuesday 17 April 2018 | 10:47 CET | News

Chile’s telecommunications regulator Subtel has banned the operators Entel, Movistar, WOM, Claro and Virgin Mobile from using the word “unlimited” in their commercial offers following an investigation. In a statement, the watchdog called on operators to adopt measures to modify their offers and make them more transparent for users after verifying that plans branded as unlimited were in fact subject to numerous restrictions. “A product marketed as ‘unlimited’ has a clear meaning for users and generates expectations of having an inexhaustible supply of data and a stable quality, which does not occur in practice,” said Subtel.

Operators have been given until 01 May to amend the terms of their plans and could be fined if they do not comply with Subtel’s order. The watchdog’s move comes after consumer protection authority Sernac censured the operators for allegedly using misleading advertising to promote their ‘unlimited’ plans.
